Charlotte Nesmith Brady
A botanical watercolorist, I graduated from the University of Illinois with BA and MA in Art Education. Teaching is my profession because of a love of school and children. Art is my medium because of a love of the land that I wanted to express and share. Always a romantic about the country, I live in the woods amidst large farms. Prairie and woodland are important in my life and are reflected in my paintings. My work is shown in galleries across North America.
The nature of watercolor is perfect for me because it lends itself to spontaneous surfaces and details. Projects that are completely controlled have never interested me. Starting out with a bit of contour drawing, the shape of a bud or a blossom, whatever has caught my interest in the first place, I make sure the work loosens up by adding water and splashes. Intuitively, I have always used a lot of "empty space." Like Chinese painters, I feel that this connects with eternity. I never feel that I have painted a good painting all by myself. I try to capture the spirit of the plants, and hope that each painting reveals a "bit of truth." Sometimes it's not the idea that started the painting, but what was discovered in the process.
